In the case of the latest version of Thomson Reuters’ bibliographic power-house tool, a ‘syncing feeling’ (as opposed to a sinking feeling) is a good thing! We’re referring, of course, to EndNote X6’s must-have new sync feature which takes the manual effort and confusion out of tallying up your web-based and desktop reference library. Use your preferences to specify when EndNote automatically synchronises your references e.g. when you open or close your library, or at timed intervals. That way, you’ll ensure all your references (up to 50,000 records) and attachments (up to 5 GB) can be accessed from either solution every time.
Other new features will definitely help EndNote users to personalise their reference library to suit the way they work and to reflect the records they use or like the most. For instance, it’s now possible to rate your favourite/frequently used references at the click of a button, so you can spot your best and most useful records instantly and even sort your references by their ratings simply by clicking on the column heading. A handy read/unread status button will also help to draw your eye to any new records, distinguishable until you either open or preview the record (this is something you can set in your preferences).
Expanded layout options let you customise your EndNote view to suit how you work. For instance, you can now choose whether you place the record/PDF preview pane or reference window at the bottom or the side of your screen – ideal if you want to make the most of widescreen monitors. You can also open references or PDFs in a separate resizeable window for editing/annotating and then close them again at the click of a button.
EndNote users now have ultimate control over the case and capitalisation of their references. Using the ‘Change Case’ command whenever you edit, move or copy fields, it’s possible to specify sentence case, lowercase, uppercase, capitalise each word or toggle cases in specific fields for multiple references. This helps to ensure your data is consistent even though capitalisation rules can vary when you import references from different sources, subject matters and in different languages.
Other time-saving new features include a new direct export feature in PubMed to take references straight into EndNote and one-click reference/attachment emailing.
The inclusion of auto syncing capabilities between your web and desktop library paves the way for the launch of EndNote’s upcoming, much anticipated iPad app – due out later this year. This new tool will complement EndNote on the desktop by putting on-the-go PDF viewing, annotating and emailing capabilities at the disposal of iPad users. The app also enables users to add, edit, group, copy and email citations, as well as sync them with their EndNote Web account.

It’s not surprising EndNote’s developers, Thomson Reuters, want to embrace the iPad revolution, which has seen Apple’s tablet adopted by more and more students and researchers. After all, iPads offer the ideal, interactive tool for reading and research on the go (writing entire essays on the touchscreen keypad can be tricky, but there are ways around that). With the help of website apps, newsfeeds and online subscriptions, this mobile learning companion helps users access, filter and digest online content and information specifically relevant to their areas of interest. Then, with the EndNote iPad app installed, they’ll be able to capture those snippets of knowledge, upload them to their web library and retain them ready to cite in their write-ups.
Soon, it won’t matter where you are or what device you’re using, you’ll be able to access your research and manage your EndNote library at any time!
