Equations Everywhere and Anywhere

Simon Marston,
Technical Specialist

What can we say about MathType that hasn’t been said before? It lets you incorporate beautifully formatted, publication-quality equations in just about any Windows, Mac or online application you can think of – and it’s surprisingly inexpensive too!

If you need to present or document more than just the most basic equations, you’ll find the Equation Editor built into Microsoft Office and other applications just doesn’t cut the mustard. Developed and licensed by the makers of MathType, Equation Editor hasn’t changed or developed in almost 20 years; yet a small investment in MathType will quickly put you in the Premier League of technical documentation!

“Equations everywhere and anywhere” is the new marketing slogan that the developers have come up with – and those are not empty words. The latest version, MathType 6.8, extends its compatibility to 40+ additional Windows applications and websites, bringing the total to over 600! Because MathType can be used in popular email clients, blogs, websites, social networks, learning and authoring systems, presentation software and more, it really does give you the power to create high-quality equations wherever you are and share them with whomsoever you want, anywhere.

MathType 6.8 for Windows delivers a number of additional improvements too. For example, you can now paste a table from a spreadsheet, document or web page straight into MathType as a matrix. And it also now works with 64-bit versions of Microsoft Office 2010.

MathType 6.8 also incorporates MathPage technology, which lets you easily convert Microsoft Word 2010 and 2007 documents into web pages, handling all mathematical symbols seamlessly and accurately; while new accessibility features make MathType 6.8 more useful for authoring content to be read by people with impaired or no vision, or those with learning difficulties.

If you're already a MathType user, rest assured that when you upgrade to 6.8, your custom settings (keyboard shortcuts, toolbars, preferences etc) remain intact; and your 6.8 equations will remain compatible with colleagues' equations in MathType 6.x and 5.x.

Meanwhile MathType 6.7 for Mac adds support for Mac OS X Lion, and now works with 500+ applications and websites, including Apple iWork '09, Microsoft Office 11, Mathematica and Gmail.
