New EndNote X5 is
smarter than ever,
packed with intelligent
features that
streamline your work
and make your life
easier so you have
more time to focus on
your research.
For stressed-out students, weary
writers and overloaded information
specialists, research and writing
without some form of reference managing
software is simply unworkable, let alone
unthinkable! As the most popular
bibliographic solution, EndNote has
become the indispensable right-hand
man (or woman) for thousands of users
around the World, automating and
accelerating the process of finding and
organising references, then creating
citations and bibliographies in minutes
rather than hours. So how do you take what's already a
firm favourite referencing tool to the next
level? By equipping users with several
new and improved product features to
help them save even more precious time
managing, using, updating and sharing
their reference collections.
In EndNote X5, the developers,
Thomson Reuters, have added some key
new functionality, including the ability to
easily and automatically update existing
references. EndNote can now search
online for more complete reference data.
When a match is found, EndNote
highlights the differences in a side-by-
side comparison of the new and existing
reference. Users can decide whether to
update the empty fields only, replace all the fields, or just copy and paste specific
information. This offers an ideal time-saving
solution for anyone who needs to update
existing references with article identifiers
such as PMCID and NIHMSID numbers for
their grant submissions.
It also offers users
yet another approach to ensuring a
reference is as complete as possible - they
can use any or all of the following methods
to create and build a record: Direct Export,
copy and paste, locate Full Text, extract DOI
bibliographic data in PDFs or use the new
Reference Update feature.
The ‘Quick Edit’ tab now includes a new
PDF viewer enabling users to review
attached PDFs and edit a record in the
same window. The PDF viewer makes it
easy for users to navigate between
multiple attachments as well as annotate
the file with their own comments and add
highlights to emphasise important
information. Users can search the entire
PDF including comments and use many
familiar options common to PDF viewing.
EndNote X5 users can also now add file
attachments and figures directly to their
EndNote Web records, as well as transfer
them between their desktop and web-
based library. EndNote X5 users receive
increased Web storage for up to 25,000
references and 1GB for their file
attachments. If users wish to share these
attachments with colleagues, then
EndNote Web provides access to PDFs in
a way that won't infringe copyright laws.
Shared references feature automatic links
(where available) to relevant full-text
articles or other material on the Web
rather than attaching the actual files.
That means users with relevant
subscriptions can legitimately download
the original document themselves in
accordance with the terms and conditions
of the publisher.
With this latest version, Thomson has
introduced quietly clever enhancements
that will maximise how you use and share
PDFs, make it easy to maintain current
and complete references with minimal
extra effort, and align your referencing
capabilities with the latest publishing or
submission requirements.
