WriteNote has been designed to allow universities and colleges to introduce
students to the concepts of references and bibliographies. With a new
version and a free trial available, it’s creating a lot of interest.
Even in the short time since its introduction, WriteNote has brought
online library resources to life for students in many educational establishments.
It’s a superb way to introduce students to conducting research online
and citing references to published works, and best of all, it doesn’t
involve software investment for each student.
Sold as an annual, site-wide subscription to the institution, with the
software hosted by its developer, ISI ResearchSoft, WriteNote was designed
after much consultation with educational establishments about exactly
what their ideal tool in this area would be. The first major update, WriteNote
1.5, is the result of all the feedback from initial users.
This easy-to-use web based tool enables students to annotate and save
web pages for citing, organise references in a personal library, and format
papers with footnotes or a bibliography. Now WriteNote 1.5 lets users
access the product from Windows, Mac and Linux machines without even the
need for plug-ins, and significantly widens the number of online databases
which can be accessed with the inclusion of hundreds of import filters.
Customised for each campus, WriteNote takes the students to their library
resources where they search for relevant content. With a single click,
students capture references into their personal library folders. Students
can also annotate and save Web pages for citing in their papers. WriteNote
has the unique advantage of offering the same “Cite While You Write”
feature (which creates a paper with properly formatted citations) as the
professional desktop products, EndNote, ProCite, and Reference Manager.
Students who require it are able to move their WriteNote libraries to
the desktop bibliographic software without missing a step.
Academic institutions can now request a free 45 day trial of WriteNote
by emailing writenote@adeptscience.co.uk.
This allows sitewide access by the college or university to WriteNote
for the purpose of evaluating this product. Once enrolled in an active
trial, members of the institution will be able to open user accounts and
begin using WriteNote.
