TCM - 19 : Quality

Windows on Quality

NWA's Quality Monitor has been used all over the world for many years in its original MS/DOS incarnation because it does its job so well, making a PC into a dedicated statistical process control terminal for the shop floor. But there's a new face now to our old friend, with the introduction of a Windows-based version.

With many measuring instrument manufacturers supplying quite serviceable SPC software with their equipment, just why has an independent program like Quality Monitor been so widely popular for so long? The answer is simple. It's because only through a separate, dedicated program can all your operators use the same basic SPC workstation.

Because NWA Quality Monitor collects data from most measurement and interface devices, you avoid the annoying variety of training, management, and support procedures that result when using different software for each device. User interface and chart formats can be standardised, and the result is a uniform system throughout your company or facility.

Because of this ease of training, users have been more than happy with the same basic version of Quality Monitor for a long time. However, with more and more operators learning how to use Windows as part of their training, many customers have decided that a Windows-based system is now more appropriate, and the developers of Quality Monitor have responded.

There are a number of advantages to a Windows-based system of course, the most obvious being that parts to be measured can be displayed on screen in diagrammatic or even photographic form, and they could be accompanied by step-by-step instructions for the operator.

As with previous versions however, if you're introducing a PC-based SPC system, you don't need to change your work flow to make it fit. Because your key data collection and control points each have unique requirements, NWA Quality Monitor can be adapted to differences in devices, process variables, and charting. The software can meet the specific needs of each process.

NWA Quality Monitor can collect and analyse data in a manner consistent with the way your company operates and still create charts that meet customer or regulatory requirements. It can produce all standard SQC/SPC charts and reports for all types of measurements, whether variable or attribute.

NWA Quality Monitor is preconfigured for many common measurement and interface devices, including:

  • Electronic scales
  • Intelligent instruments
  • Gauge interface devices
  • Multiplexers
