A new add-on for Maple V, the world's most advanced mathematics program, allows thousands of researchers in all technical disciplines to add an extra dimension to their published works. The IBM techexplorer Hypermedia Browser™ for Maple is the result of collaboration between Waterloo Maple Inc and IBM. Taking IBM's plug-in technology for browsing LaTeX documents on the Web, WMI has added an interactive mathematical capability. Maple users can now publish and explore published technical papers in a way that has never been achieved before. Now, researchers can use Maple V and simply export worksheets to the techexplorer for Maple format to electronically publish their work. They can even use the typesetting language they have been trained to use for technical publishing, LaTeX, and then add the mathematical meaning to expressions using the Maple language. The advantage of using this approach is publishing quality output for the mathematics, from files which are much smaller and quicker to download than the combination of HTML and GIF images. Anybody can use techexplorer for Maple to browse Maple documents on the Web. However, Maple users have the added advantage of being able to explore the mathematical content simply by clicking on an expression. This means that Maple users can work with published material from the Internet or Intranet, add it to their own work and readily publish their new work electronically. Maple users also now have the perfect vehicle for capturing and disseminating technical knowledge on internal Intranets, minimizing knowledge loss through staff turnover and duplication of work when similar projects are initiated.

Full Maple capability for Unix users announced The acclaimed latest version of Maple V, Release 5, is now available for the important Unix workstation sector of the market. It joins the earlier and highly successful versions for Windows and Macintosh. Maple V Release 5 has now been optimised for Sun SPARC and SGI R3000+ architectures, as well as DEC Alpha, HP/9000, IBM RS/6000, Solaris and x86 Linux. Maple has established an extremely wide user base amongst those wishing to use mathematics creatively. Unlike scientific spreadsheets and other programs which use numerical analysis, Maple's symbolic approach does not have approximation errors or take a simplistic 'formula only' view. Its innovative worksheet environment supports both interactive problem solving and application programming. And new features such as the symbolic spreadsheet provide unique capabilities. The new release is probably the most significant in the history of Maple. It is fully internet/intranet aware, with the ability to create complex web documents instantly. The new 'Smart Plots' automatically produce 2D or 3D plots of any expression with ultra-fast manipulation. For those working with other environments, there are features such as the ability to execute commands in MATLAB directly, and the capability of generating optimised C and Fortran programs directly. |
