New Maplesoft project for Toyota leverages symbolic computation in control systems engineering

Maplesoft’s (Waterloo, Canada) ongoing partnership with Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc has been expanded to include a new project. This project will see the leading car manufacturer use new symbolic computation methods in robust control design, with a strong focus on methods for linear, nonlinear and parametric systems. Maplesoft technology is rooted in strong symbolic computation techniques making it an appropriate choice for Toyota.

The main goal of the new Symbolic Control project is ground-breaking research that leads to the implementation of symbolic design and analysis methods for linear, nonlinear and parametric robust control. The new research will allow developers to consider system nonlinearities, modelling inaccuracies and parametric uncertainties in the design process. As a result Toyota expects to shorten development time while maintaining high quality results.

This new project follows the completion of another successful Maplesoft project for Toyota which saw high-end research and implementation of new methods for model simplification and preprocessing of high level acausal dynamical models. Simplification enables the conversion of high-level descriptive models into smaller executable models for faster execution and provides for better analysis, higher efficiency and more accurate simulation. Model simplification allows engineers to focus on describing the physical properties of the system in an equation-based manner. It also makes use of the power of mathematical equations to better manage models, so engineers obtain the optimal results faster.

Using the results of the Model Simplification project as a foundation, the Symbolic Control project will involve research on analysing, designing and simplifying controller models in isolation, as well as in system models. This work will support the control design process by speeding up test and simulation times in the lab environment and ensuring optimal behaviour in the final product. Modelica model import and export, as well as automated model assembly for easy and faster control design processes, are other goals of the project.

The research and resulting tools from the first project for Toyota were presented at several conferences and three patent applications are in progress.

The power to control coding with VisSim/ECD

 

VisSim/Embedded Controls Developer™ (VisSim/ECD) from Visual Solutions Incorporated (VSI) (Westford, Massachusetts) generates efficient fixed point C code for a range of targets.

VisSim/Embedded Controls Developer (VisSim/ECD) is an environment for model-based development of embedded control systems. VisSim makes it easy to construct block diagrams of both controllers and plants. Fast and accurate system simulation with frequency domain analysis makes it easy to design the controller off-line. Built-in optimisation gives automatic parameter tuning to user defined cost criteria. Systems can be as simple as PID control or as complex as a multi-axis sensorless FOC PMSM controller with packet-based RS485 command protocol and dynamic I2C EEPROM read/write.

After simulation, VisSim’s Code Generator uses the same diagram to generate highly efficient C code and compiles to an executable image for an embedded target. The VisSim target HotLink downloads the executable image and lets you change controller gains from the PC host and displays digital scope results of on-target signals.

VisSim/ECD is unique in its ability to generate highly efficient, high sample rate, low jitter target executables. For example, a closed-loop PID control with encoder input and PWM output and one digital output line takes 1.1K flash and 100 bytes RAM on the MSP430, and VisSim/ECD generated code can sample at rates over 1 MHz on the F28335. As a TI third party partner, Visual Solutions has gained valuable access to TI technology to tune VisSim/ECD to make best use of TI processors and peripherals.

MapleSim aids in the design of RoboThespian, a robot that walks and talks

 

Maplesoft (Ontario, Canada) has announced its collaboration with Engineered Arts Limited, a company that designs and produces the revolutionary RoboThespian™ robots. The current RoboThespian is a life-sized, programmable, humanoid robot designed to be used for entertainment and communication. It can talk and sing – and even recite Shakespeare. The next generation RoboThespian robot will be a full size humanoid dynamic robot that walks, runs and jumps. The goal of the RoboThespian project is to make humans think more deeply about humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence. Being fully interactive, user friendly and able to speak more than a dozen languages, RoboThespian is capable of communicating and entertaining in a way that few people have experienced before.

The design engineers at Engineered Arts are currently using MapleSim to design a biologically analogous humanoid robot leg integrating a novel actuator studying its static and dynamic stability and building the designed leg to determine strategies for its control. The design is comparable to the human musculoskeletal system. Unlike conventional robots actuated by electric motors, it is characterised by high non-linearity and humanlike compliance. A MapleSim model of the leg and actuators was built to verify the relationship between actuators under pressure, their contraction and the equivalent joint angles in static states. MapleSim’s custom component template was used extensively to model the robot’s pneumatic actuators. The leg model was effortlessly created by a chain of multibody components and the compliant foot was easily modelled with real-time feedback from the 3-D view.

Will Jackson and his team at Engineered Arts aim to have a full-body MapleSim model of the next generation RoboThespian by early 2013 and a working prototype later in the year.

Tighter Modelica integration in latest release of MapleSim provides unmatched system-level modelling

 

Enhancements include tools to speed up testing and experimentation process

The latest release of MapleSim™, the Modelica®-based physical modelling and simulation platform, has been announced by Maplesoft™ (Waterloo, Canada). With tighter Modelica integration, as well as more simulation, analysis and connectivity capabilities, MapleSim 6 is available from Adept Scientific (Letchworth, Herts) and offers even more ways for engineers to meet and exceed their system-level requirements.

MapleSim is based on the open standard Modelica modelling language for describing physical models and components. In MapleSim 6 support for Modelica is enhanced in many ways making it even easier for engineers to take control of their modelling and analysis. MapleSim 6 includes a view that instantly shows the corresponding Modelica code for any subsystem or component. By looking at the code engineers can tell precisely what their model is doing and more easily correct or improve its behaviour. Other Modelica features include the ability to open and immediately use Modelica files inside MapleSim; the ability to easily save any MapleSim model as a Modelica file; and, through the new MapleSim Connector for FMI, the ability to export MapleSim models in a standard format that was established with the help of the Modelica Association which is easily understood by other FMI-compliant tools.

The MapleSim Connector for FMI lets users export models to other FMI-compliant tools; the MapleSim Connector for B&R Automation Studio enables the transfer of physical models into the integrated development environment of B&R Automation Studio; and the MapleSim Connector for VI-CarRealTime™ allows engineers to incorporate high-fidelity, multidomain models created in MapleSim into the real-time vehicle simulation environment of VI-CarRealTime.

MapleSim 6 also offers several features that reduce development time by speeding up the testing and experimentation process. MapleSim 6 supports the ability to access external code directly from within their simulations. For example, customers can simplify their testing by calling external controller code directly from within MapleSim instead of exporting the MapleSim model to another tool. MapleSim 6 also includes a new “snapshots” feature that speeds up experimentation by allowing customers to start experiments from any time-step and initial condition without having to rerun the model every time. This release also provides the ability to run batch simulations and optimisations in parallel, taking advantage of multiple CPUs to complete the computations significantly faster.

In a move to enhance this offering, Adept is now able to formerly call upon Maplesoft’s (Waterloo, Canada) newly created professional consultancy services which will complement Adept’s expertise and provide a project implementation route for customers.
