EndNote X6 for Mac now available

Thomson Reuters EndNote® (Philadelphia, PA) X6 for Mac, the bibliographic management and publishing solution used by millions of researchers, librarians and students worldwide, is now available from Adept Scientific (Letchworth, Herts).

Now Mac users can take advantage of the latest enhancements to EndNote X6 which keeps its users up-to-date with the constantly evolving world of scholarly research and publishing by providing the ability to search, organise and share reference materials, as well as automatically format bibliographies, cutting down on the time spent collecting research and writing manuscripts, patent applications and grant proposals.

EndNote X6 enables researchers to enhance the efficiency of their authorship activities by providing sync capabilities between EndNote and EndNote Web allowing users to access research from any computer and offers secure storage for references and PDF libraries. The new functionality, in addition to EndNote’s ability to automatically download full text PDFs and update references, enables users to be more productive and manage their research libraries more effectively.

Update and sync references

With this release, EndNote X6 Mac users can update and synchronise references in EndNote desktop and EndNote Web with one click. Users also have the ability to maintain and synchronise references in their EndNote library across multiple computers. This is a significant improvement to EndNote as users increasingly access numerous platforms to gather data and information. The upgrade also includes increased storage of both references and PDFs in EndNote Web.

More effective and efficient editing

Through EndNote X6 researchers can now edit footnote citations, move or copy the contents of one field to another with text formatting and use more layout options, including an improved PDF Viewer for annotating files.

Rate references

In addition to allowing for tagging solutions to indicate which references have or have not been reviewed, EndNote X6 allows users to set personal rating preferences. Users can then refine their library searches with these ratings.

The latest version of EndNote also enables users to set sophisticated customisation preferences, more effectively manage medical journal names and use the new PubMed direct export feature to import records more quickly.

EndNote X6 for Mac and Windows is available from Adept Scientific, a Thomson Reuters partner and support centre in the UK and Ireland, Germany, Austria and Denmark. Upgrades and new copies may be ordered at www.adeptstore.com.

Now Mac users can take advantage of Thomson Reuters EndNote X5

Thomson Reuters EndNote® X5 for Mac, the bibliographic management and publishing solution used by millions of researchers, librarians and students Worldwide, has been released by Thomson Reuters (Philadelphia, PA).  Available from Adept Scientific (Letchworth, Herts) EndNote X5 for Windows and Mac enables researchers to add and move file attachments between their computer and Web account, view and annotate PDFs and update references automatically.

“EndNote X5 offers several new and improved product features to help users save valuable time managing their reference collections,” said Keith MacGregor, Executive Vice President, Thomson Reuters. “We are continually looking to improve the scholarly research and publishing experience for our customers and the latest update adds key functionalities like the ability to update existing references with critical data needed for grant submissions.”

View and annotate PDF files within EndNote

A new PDF viewer joins the “Quick Edit” tab in EndNote X5 enabling users to review an attached PDF and edit a record in one place. The PDF viewer makes it easy to navigate between multiple attachments as well as annotate the file with highlights and comments. Users can search the entire PDF including comments and use many familiar options common to PDF viewing.

Update references automatically

Existing references can now be updated easily with a new option that lets EndNote search online for more complete reference detail. When a match is found EndNote highlights the differences in a side-by-side comparison of the new and existing reference. Users can decide whether to update the empty fields only, replace all the fields or copy-and-paste specific information. While any field can be updated, the new feature saves time for existing references that now require article identifiers such as PMCID and NIHMSID numbers for grant submissions.

Add and transfer file attachments to the Web

Every EndNote user receives their own EndNote Web account for collaborating with others and accessing references when away from the desktop. EndNote X5 users can access file attachments and figures within their EndNote Web records. File attachments can be added directly to an EndNote Web record or transferred between a local library and the Web to see the same reference detail in both environments. EndNote X5 users will also receive increased Web storage for up to 25,000 references and 1GB for their file attachments.

The latest version of EndNote for Mac also enables users to:

Use new conditional formatting in journal styles that automatically substitutes data for empty fields.

  • Review differences in duplicate records quickly with auto-highlights.
  • Select a new citation style – Author (Year) – in Microsoft® Word.
  • Use two new reference types – Data Set and Music – and new fields in the Journal Article reference type – Article Number and NIHMSID.
  • Cite While You Write in over 5,000 journal styles!
  • The reference update feature can now update more than one reference at a time.
  • Transfer between the computer and Web now supports a 5,000 reference limit, previously 500.

EndNote X4.0.2 PubMed Alert

Thomson Reuters (Philadelphia, PA) has announced an important update to EndNote X4.0.2 which will require users to replace their PubMed connection file.

The PubMed connection file included with EndNote X4.0.2 for both Windows and Mac places the full journal name in the Journal field rather than the abbreviated journal name.

The Medical terms list in EndNote keys on the abbreviated journal name for presenting the appropriate variation in bibliographies. Replacing the X4.0.2 PubMed connection file will restore the journal name substitution with the terms list. This only applies to EndNote X4.0.2, other versions are not affected.

To properly install this new connection file:

1. Download the connection file and save it somewhere easy to find, such as your Desktop.
2. Double-click on the downloaded file to open it in the EndNote software.
3. Click the File menu in EndNote and select Save As.
4. IMPORTANT: Make sure that the name shows here as PubMed (NLM). You may need to remove the word “Copy” to get it to show exactly correctly. Then, click Save.
5. The correct connection file is now installed in EndNote. You can delete the copy that you downloaded.

To upload this new connection file, please visit http://www.endnote.com/enpmalert.asp.
