Frequently Asked Questions about Word2TeX

General questions

  • Q: Does Word2TeX run on Macintosh computers or Does Word2TeX run on Linux/UNIX?
    • A: No. Word2TeX runs only on Microsoft Windows 95,98,Me,NT,2000 and XP.
  • Q: Is it possible to convert LaTeX to Word with Word2TeX?
    • A: No. But TeX2Word will do this job.
  • Q: What I am supposed to do with .tex files to view/print them?
    • A: LaTeX will compile them, we would recommend MikTeX, since it's freeware and has documentation.

Installing/Uninstalling

  • Q: After installing Word2TeX there's no "TeX" option in File|Save As... Why?
    • A: Word2TeX's program folder contains files word2tex.cnv, word2tex.wll. Copy word2tex.cnv to the Text Converters folder (usually Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TEXTCONV) and word2tex.wll to Start Up folder (usually \STARTUP).
      After doing this you'll have to open any text file (non-native Word doc) in Word and "TeX" option will appear in File|Save As... dialogue box.

Figure conversion

  • Q: Some figures in documents can't be converted by Word2TeX. Why?
    • A: Word2TeX can't convert Word drawings (Shapes), so you should convert them to figures first.
      In your Word document click on that Shapes so that all the Shape will be selected;
      copy it to clipboard (Ctrl-Ins or Edit|Copy);
      open WordPad application that is supplied with Windows (Programs|Accessories|WordPad);
      paste picture from clipboard (Edit|Paste or Shift-Ins);
      select it and copy to clipboard from WordPad;
      return back to Word and paste it.
  • Q: I use Word2TeX on Windows NT 4.0. Figures aren't converted at all when I do figure conversions via PostScript printer... Why?
    • A: In Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft supply PSCRIPT.DLL PostScript printer driver, which does not write EPS files. Upgrade to Word2TeX 3.0, it translates PS to EPS automatically in most cases.

Equation conversion

  • Q: Does Word2TeX translate MathType equations?
    • A: Yes, Word2TeX can convert Design Science MathType equations. Moreover it can convert equations created by any existing MathType versions. Since MathType is the most popular tool for writing equations Word2TeX will be improved to support future versions of MathType when ever they are released.

PDF

  • Q: I have downloaded your sample Word file and converted it to LaTeX... Is the PDF file supposed to be created at the same time when I do the File|Save As... or is there another step I must take?
    • A: Word2TeX converts documents to LaTeX. If you want translate your LaTeX documents to PDF you should use pdfLaTeX or dvipdf freeware tools.
