| Question 10: Whenever I click one of the EndNote commands
in Word (either under the Tools / EndNote menu or on the EndNote toolbar)
I get an error every time: "This Command is Not Available Because a Document
Window is Not Active". How can I fix this?
Answer: First check to see you if are trying to format a Word
Template instead of a Word document (*.DOC file). To distinguish a document
file from a template, locate the file in the Finder and choose File /
Get Info. The "Kind" of file will be either document or template, and
the file will a different icon depending upon the type:

Word 98 document |

Word 98 template |

Word 2001 document |

Word 2001 template |

Word X document |

Word X template |
If the document is actually a template, then this error message will
appear. To correct this problem, open the file in Word, choose “File...Save
As...” and resave the file being careful to specify "Word Document" as
the kind of file to save.
If the file you are formatting is not a template but a Word *.DOC file,
then check to make sure Visual Basic is installed by selecting “Tools
/ Macro / Visual Basic Editor” to open the Visual Basic Editor. If you
are unable to open the Visual Basic Editor, the Visual Basic files are
either missing or damaged. In this case you should do a complete reinstallation
of Microsoft Word, including the Visual Basic files.
If you are able to open the Visual Basic Editor without problems, then
you may have corrupted Word preferences and/or extensions. To clean up
your Word preferences and extensions, please do the following:
- Quit Microsoft Word.
- Go to the “Microsoft Office...:Templates” folder, rename “Normal”
to “Normal.old” and then drag it to the desktop. Restart Word, and then
try the EndNote commands again. If that does not work, then you must
continue to step 3.
- Delete the following files for your version of Word:
Word 98
Delete the following extensions from the “System Folder:Extensions”
folder:
- Microsoft Component Library
- Microsoft OLE Automation
- Microsoft OLE Library
- Microsoft Structured Storage
- PPC Registration Database (may not be present)
Delete the following files from the “System Folder:Preferences” folder:
- Embedding Preferences
- PPC Registration Database
- Registration Database
- Word Settings (8)
Word 2001
Delete the following extensions from the “System Folder:Extensions”
folder:
- Microsoft Component Library
- Microsoft OLE Automation
- Microsoft OLE Library
- Microsoft Structured Storage
- PPC Registration Database (may not be present)
Delete the following files from the “System Folder:Preferences” folder:
- Embedding Preferences
- PPC Registration Database
- Registration Database
- Word Settings (9) (This particular file should be found inside
the “Microsoft” folder, inside the “Preferences” folder.)
Word X
Temporarily move these extensions from the “Microsoft Office X:Office”
folder:
- MS Component Library
- MS OLE Automation
- MS OLE Library
- MS Structured Storage
After moving these extensions to your desktop, launch Word. You should
get a message stating “There is not enough memory or disk space to run
Word”. This is normal. After seeing this message, place the MS extensions
back into “Microsoft Office X:Office”.
Now delete the following files from the “Users : <Your username>
: Library : Preferences : Microsoft” folder:
- Word Settings (10)
- Office Registration Cache X
- Carbon Registration Database
- If you are running OS9, restart your computer and rebuild the desktop
(by holding down Option+Command keys as the computer restarts). If you
are running OSX, just restart your computer.
- Start EndNote from its own program icon and open a library.
- Leave EndNote running and then start Word.
- Now, try to access EndNote via Word's Tools menu and use one of the
EndNote commands, such as Find Citation(s).
