The EndNote® for iPad app is the iOS version of EndNote® — the world's most popular reference management software. With flexible tools for searching, organizing and sharing your research, the EndNote® for iPad app extends your ability to collect, collaborate, and create from anywhere.

Not an EndNote user? EndNote enables you to move seamlessly through your research process with flexible tools for searching, organizing and sharing your research, creating your bibliography and writing your paper. You'll save hours building and maintaining reference libraries and creating bibliographies. With unique features to maximize your time like automatically finding full text and updating records, EndNote lets you spend less time in the details.

Frequently Asked Questions about the App

Q: The PDF annotations in EndNote for iPad do not sync with other versions of EndNote. Why not?
A: EndNote for iPad uses a technology called “freehand annotations” that cannot be synchronized or viewed in EndNote on other platforms but is retained in PDFs on the iPad device. We are looking into options to support “native pdf annotations” in the EndNote iPad app and hope to implement this soon. In the meantime, you can use this Knowledge Base article as another possible option.

Q: EndNote for iPad can link directly to Dropbox. Why not link to other Cloud-based file storage systems?
A: Direct linking to Dropbox was a highly requested feature from our EndNote customers. It is likely possible that we can add similar support for other third-party, Cloud-based file storage systems but need to hear from users about which systems we should prioritize. Please contact us and let us know.

Q: It looks like the EndNote iPad app synchronizes with EndNote Web. I want to sync with my Windows/Macintosh version of EndNote. How do I do this?
A: All current versions of EndNote use "EndNoteSync" technology to synchronize your reference data across platforms and devices. If you mainly use your desktop (Windows/Macintosh) version of EndNote and want to sync with iPad, you still need to set-up an EndNote Web account to enable sync. You do not necessarily need to use the web interface of EndNote to sync but you do need an EndNote Web account.

Q: Can I use Safari to save references from web-based databases into EndNote on iPad?
A: Yes. Most web-based citation databases like Web of Science, Pubmed, and Google Scholar allow for “direct export” of reference information. To do this using Safari on iPad, simply perform your search in the database of your choice, choose the “save to EndNote” or “export to reference management software” option and then use the “Open in…” function of Safari to open the exported file in EndNote for iPad. EndNote for iPad supports importing most .ciw, .enw, .nbib, and .ris files. Note that you can also use the built-in web browser in the EndNote for iPad app to search databases and import reference material. Please see this knowledgebase article for more information.

Q: Does the EndNote for iPad app run on all iPads and versions of iOS?
A: EndNote for iPad is compatible with all iPads (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation, and iPad Mini – WiFi and WiFi+3G models) iOS version 5.1.1 and 6.x are supported. Local file attachment storage capacity is based on available iPad memory.
