The newly released EndNote version 8 can directly search or import data
from PubMed without issue.
January
14, 2004
Due to a recent format change to the way PubMed data is tagged, EndNote
users who try to save search results to a text file and import into EndNote
may encounter problems. You may find that it looks as if only a single
record is imported and that all data from multiple records is imported
into this single record. If you try to import a text file containing a
large amount of records you may get an "out of memory" error
message. This issue occurs if you use the "PubMed (NLM)"
import filter that comes with EndNote v7 or earlier.
To address this change we have created a new "PubMed (NLM)"
import filter. Download the filter below for your platform and save
it into the Filters subfolder located in your EndNote program folder.
You may want to first delete the old "PubMed (NLM)" filter before
you save the updated copy into this folder to avoid confusion. If you
use the updated filter to import you should have no further difficulty.
(Note that the PubMed Connect feature in EndNote v6.0.2 and 7 is not affected
by these changes).

Many of you are aware that the National Library of Medicine has implemented
system infrastructure enhancements that have caused the PubMed (NLM) connection
to fail in older versions of EndNote. Please review the appropriate notice
below for an update. At this time, our latest versions, EndNote 7 (Windows
and Macintosh) and EndNote 6.0.2 (Windows and Macintosh), are successfully
able to connect to and search PubMed.
Notice for EndNote v6.x customers (single-user version): We have
certified an update for EndNote 6, which is available at no charge from
our website to all registered EndNote 6 users. This update restores the
Internet Search (Connect) feature in EndNote. Download the EndNote
6.0.2 update.
Notice for EndNote v6.x Volume and Multi-copy customers: If your
department or organization holds a Volume or Multi-copy license for EndNote
6, please submit your request to receive the 6.0.2 update CD at no charge
by emailing us at services@adeptscience.co.uk
with your serial number enclosed.
Notice for EndNote v5.x, 4.x, and 3.x users: The PubMed (NLM)
connection feature in EndNote v5.x through 3.x will no longer work. If
you try to use the PubMed (NLM) connection file in these versions of EndNote,
you will get an error message that reads "Error searching for records.
PubMed response: 301 Moved permanently..." Due to the magnitude of
the engineering modifications necessary, we will not be able to provide
a fix or patch for EndNote v5.x, 4.x or 3.x programs to accommodate those
changes. We recommend that all v5.x, 4.x and 3.x users who rely extensively
on searching PubMed through EndNote upgrade to EndNote v7.
Options for EndNote version 5.x, 4.x and 3.x users:
A) You can upgrade to v6.x and continue to utilize the "Connect"
command to query PubMed directly from your EndNote. For upgrade information,
please see http://www.endnote.com/en6info.asp.
B) When the PubMed changes are implemented, you will be able
to browse the PubMed website and save your references into a text file
that can be imported into the software. To do this:
- Browse to the PubMed website through an Internet browser.
- Enter your searches in the website (Select "Clipboard"
from the "Send to" drop down menu to save records from multiple
searches as you work).
- On the search results page, select "MEDLINE" in the dropdown
menu next to the "Display" button.
- Choose "File" from the "Send to" drop-down menu,
and then click on "Send to."
- Select "Save" on the following screen. In the next screen
you will be able to change the file name (we recommend saving with
a *.txt extension).
- In EndNote, open the library where you would like these references
saved.
- Select the Import command.
- Make sure the File Type is set to "All Files (*.*)"
- Select the PubMed (NLM) filter (in EndNote) [EndNote 3: use the
Medline (NLM) filter in the NLM_(Grateful_Med) folder].
- Click the Import button.
The text references that you downloaded from the website will be imported
into your database/library. This is the procedure all EndNote users
followed prior to the introduction of the Connect feature in EndNote
3. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our technical
support department.
We believe the actions being undertaken at PubMed ultimately will improve
the reliability of your access to PubMed in the long term and we are committed
to taking advantage of these enhancements in our current program versions.
Thank you for using EndNote,
