Polyhedron Licensing System (PLS) is a simple but flexible package for controlling the use of licensed software without the expense or inconvenience of “dongle” or licence server systems.
PLS gives software vendors the ability to specify “hard” and/or “soft” forms of copy protection. For example a “soft” protection scheme might display the licensee’s name when the program runs, so that the source of pirated versions can be traced. A “harder” scheme might involve checking that the program runs only when a particular hard disk is present.
In addition, PLS can be used to implement time-limited licences, for example for trial versions. Another option is to use PLS to enable selected facilities within an application.
PLS is extremely easy to use, both for the vendor and the end-user. Licences are contained in small plain text files which can be emailed, or even dictated over the telephone. The licensed software itself may be distributed freely, but remains inoperative (or restricted) until a valid licence file is found. Any attempt to tamper with the licence file is detected by PLS.
PLS is available for Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 and XP systems. Object code versions are supplied for Intel Visual Fortran, Compaq Visual Fortran, Lahey LF95 and Salford FTN95. In addition a DLL version, callable from Visual Basic, Delphi and other languages is supplied.
