GenStat Hints and Tips

Tip 1: Context-Sensitive help

Did you know that GenStat has a glossary in its help system?

So, if you want an explanation of any technical term in the output, just click on the word or highlight it if it's a phrase. Then press the F1 key. Here we have asked GenStat to explain the phrase "Percentage variance accounted for".

Tip 2: Store the analysis with the design

If you save a design from GenStat's Standard Design menu in a spreadsheet, GenStat will also store the script of commands needed later to do the analysis. For example, suppose we construct a design using the menu as shown here.

We then save the resulting speadsheet and, later on, enter the results of the experiment into a column called Results. Next we highlight the Results column (by clicking on the name, Results, at the top), make a right-mouse click, and select the Analysis of Variance line.

This loads the Analysis of Variance menu, with the Treatment structure and Block structure boxes set as required to analyse the Results. You can now just click on OK to get the analysis.

Alternatively, you can click on Spread on the menu, and select the Analysis line from the Sheet section of the menu.

This loads the menu to Analyse Spreadsheet Columns. To use this, you simple click on the columns to analyse, and click on OK. Notice that the script of analysis commands is recorded in the lower part of the menu.

Product Reviews

GenStat is so versatile - I have not yet come across a test that I need that GenStat does not provide.
Dr Samantha Cook, Research Scientist, Rothamsted Research

We chose to purchase GenStat as opposed to other packages after careful consideration. Following a trial run we were impressed by how easy to handle the package was. The programme is simply set out and allows users of all levels to easily navigate it."
