Press ReleasesOpen University Signs Agreement for 2400 Maple Licences

Mathematical software will be at the heart of a new 3rd level course on Computer Algebra

In a significant academic deal, Maple™ mathematical software has been adopted by the UK’s Open University for their upcoming 3rd level course entitled Computer Algebra: Chaos and Simulations, which is set to start in 2008. Academic staff at the university will be using the software in the design and development of the course.

The agreement, signed with Adept Scientific plc (Letchworth, Herts.) who are Maplesoft’s™ partners and distributors in the United Kingdom, is for an initial quantity of up to 2400 copies of the software, with additional licences available on agreed terms.

Elaine Bragg, Commercial Director at Adept Scientific states, “As the software that defined computer algebra, Maple is the ideal choice for this exciting new course and we really appreciate the confidence and commitment that the Open University has shown. We look forward to working with them to support their investment in Maple for many years to come.”

For more than 20 years, Maple has been widely acknowledged as the most advanced software system for learning and applying mathematics. Today its legendary symbolic engine is combined with powerful numeric solvers, robust programming tools, and an intuitive, interactive, document-centred interface. Easier to use and more affordable than many graphing calculators, Maple provides powerful tools for solving mathematical problems in calculus, algebra, physics, differential equations, and more. As a unique feature of Maple, rich, executable technical documents capture the knowledge and thinking behind each solution.

Maple also incorporates many features and resources to help students explore, understand, and apply mathematics. A broad range of tools provide tutors and course leaders with more control over the management of course work and assignments, ensuring that students focus on the concepts and not just the mechanics of the material. Whether solving equations, manipulating matrices, or using Maple’s outstanding graphic and animation tools to model and visualise, students benefit from Maple’s ability to display all the required steps and the thinking behind the math problems they are facing.

Running on Windows®, Macintosh®, Linux®, and UNIX® platforms, Maple has been adopted as the mathematics software of choice by leading universities all over the world. It is also widely used in engineering- and science-based industries and research organisations, giving a distinct career advantage to graduates of institutions that use Maple in their teaching.

About The Open University
The Open University is UK’s largest university and is ranked in the top five of all UK universities for teaching quality, according to the Sunday Times University Guide 2006. It is a distance learning university founded to bring higher education to people who are unable to study at a conventional university. Focused on part-time higher education, it offers supported open learning materials for undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in many subjects.
