Major new version of EndNote is released
EndNote X for Windows expands PDF management and simplifies reference handling for researchers worldwide
Adept Scientific announces the release of a major upgrade to EndNote® — the bibliographic management software used by millions of researchers, librarians and students. The industry standard for creating easy bibliographies and managing references, EndNote X now introduces expanded PDF management, increased flexibility in viewing, searching and handling reference information, and more.
“Maintaining links between references and PDF files is essential for scholarship and collaboration,” said David L. Kochalko, president of Thomson ResearchSoft, the developers of EndNote. “With EndNote X users can drag and drop a PDF directly onto a reference and never break the links, making EndNote the central repository of reference information and accompanying full text articles.”
Existing PDF links in an EndNote library can be converted to the new PDF management system in one step. And the new compressed library option creates a single-file backup for easy transport of an EndNote library between computers. These time-saving features make it easy to share an EndNote library, including the linked PDFs, with colleagues.
According to Dr Paul Bragg, managing director of EndNote’s UK distributor Adept Scientific, “What is really exciting is how much more flexibility EndNote X offers users in the way they work with their references. ” Users can view up to eight fields in the reference list display, and click-sort column headings to locate records quickly. PDF links are identified easily with a new PDF icon. The reference edit window now includes a new option to “show and hide empty fields” to reduce scrolling through reference detail. Also, in response to user requests, four new reference types are available — Grant, Ancient Text (for classical texts and manuscripts), Dictionary and Encyclopedia.
This new version also lets users search EndNote libraries using the new “begins with” or “ends with” options for fields and words. EndNote X offers many more ways to connect EndNote with bibliographic databases and publishing styles — 800+ connections to online sources of literature references, 540+ import filters and over 2,300 journal styles so that citations and bibliographies are formatted automatically to publishers’ specifications.
EndNote X is designed for Windows 2000 and XP. EndNote X for Mac OS X is scheduled to ship in autumn 2006. EndNote is supplied and supported in the UK and Ireland by Adept Scientific plc, Amor Way, Letchworth, Herts.
