On Thursday 25th March 2004, Bedfordshire Business Link officially presented Letchworth-based company Adept Scientific with the Investors in People (IIP) Award. Adept Scientific is the UK’s leading supplier of PC solutions to a wide range of users. It’s likely you’ll find at least one of Adept’s products at work in most of the country’s major industries and universities. Users choose Adept’s software to streamline the development and improve the accuracy of their engineering or research-based projects.

Investors in People is a nationally recognised business standard. It sets out levels of good practice for the training and development of people to achieve business goals. 52% of the Sunday Times ‘Top 50 Best Companies to Work For’ currently work with the IIP Standard.

Adept wanted to achieve IIP accreditation because they believe their most valuable resource is their employees. Even before applying for IIP status, Adept had recruited an internal Training & Development Facilitator. The aim was to deliver a wide range of training to provide staff with the skills they need to do their jobs better, and at the same time, achieve success and satisfaction in their work. Processes were also put in place to continually review staff development. Plus an induction process was set up to ensure the thorough initiation of new staff. So Investors in People was seen as almost a natural progression to enhance the best practice already in place.

As a result, according to Adept’s IIP assessment report, ‘staff feel very positive about the way the company is managed and its caring approach to people.’ There is ‘a positive working environment in which staff feel valued, resulting in high levels of commitment to the company… Staff felt empowered to contribute and make decisions.’

Adept Scientific has already received recognition within the local business community by winning the North Hertfordshire Business Internet Award two years running (2002 & 2003) – an award which acknowledges the company that has made best and most effective use of the Web to develop their business. Adept was also short listed for the Most Successful Business 30+ Staff category.
