The EndNote add-in is only compatible with Microsoft Word or some versions of WordPerfect. However, if you are using a different word processor it is still possible to use EndNote to insert citations and format your paper.
Provided your word processor can save files in RTF format, you can use the following procedure to insert citations from EndNote 5, 7 and 8. (This function is not available in EndNote 6).
You can also use this method to insert citations from EndNote into other word processors:
A. Launch your word processor and create a new document.
B. When you wish to insert a citation, toggle to EndNote and select the reference you wish to insert
C. Click on Edit, Copy in EndNote and toggle back to Word.
D. Click on Edit, Paste. The reference will appear in temporary form e.g.
{Barkeling, 1995 #6}
E. You can continue writing and inserting citations in the above fashion. For multiple citation entries simply highlight them in EndNote and copy and paste into your word processor.
F. When you wish to format your paper, please save your file in RTF format.
G. Launch EndNote and click on Tools, RTF Document Scan, RTF Document Scan (if you are using EndNote X1 then click on 'Format Paper').
H. Specify your .RTF file that you have created in your word processor and click on Open
I. Select the output style you wish to use e.g. Vancouver and click on Format.
J. EndNote will prompt you for a name for your formatted paper (by default it adds the output style name to the RTF file name).
K. Click on Save. You can now open your word processor and look at your formatted paper by opening the new RTF file created by EndNote.
If you wish to continue working with your document, make sure that you use the unformatted RTF file as the is the master file from which you final formatted document will be created using RTF Document Scan.
