Opening and Converting old EndNote Libraries
EndNote 8 and 9 automatically converts libraries created with earlier versions of Endnote (versions 5, 6, or 7) to the version 8 or 9 format.
To convert an older EndNote library:
1. Start EndNote.
2. From the File menu, select Open and then Open Library.
3. On the file dialogue, locate and highlight the old library, and click Open.
EndNote will warn that the selected library was created with an older version, and will ask for permission to convert it.
4. Click OK to convert the library. Name the new library and click Save. The conversion makes a copy of the original library in the version 8 format, and leaves the original library intact.
If automatic conversion fails:
Occasionally, opening libraries created by earlier versions fails to convert automatically to EndNote 8/9 format. If this happens, try the following:
1) Load the old library on the version where it was created.
2) Ensure the style selected is set to 'RefMan RIS export'. Click on 'File' - 'Export'
3) You will be presented with a dialog box asking you to choose a location and file name. Name the file something suitable, normally similar to the library file name. Ensure the location is set to desktop or somewhere it will be easily located again
4) Click on save.
5) Close the older version of EndNote, and load the latest version of EndNote (8/9).
6) Create a new library, naming it something similar to old library.
7) Click on 'file' - 'Import'
8) Choose the text file we have just created in step 4. Under 'Import option', select RefMan RIS.
9) Click on Import.
10) You should now have all your references from your old library in your new library which is compatible with the new version of EndNote. Save the library.
NOTE: EndNote 8 and 9 libraries are not compatible with previous versions of EndNote.
IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANY PROBLEMS OR THIS PROCEDURE FAILS, CONTACT TECHNICAL SUPPORT ALONG WITH THE LIBRARY FILES ATTACHED.
Using old Output Styles, Import Filters and Connection Files
The Output Styles, Import Filters and Connection Files supplied with EndNote 8 and 9 have been updated to the new format, and cannot be used by earlier versions of EndNote.
You may have created custom content files with an earlier version of EndNote. EndNote 8 or 9 can use your custom styles, import filters, and connection files that were created with EndNote versions 4 to 7. However, once you edit one of these files with EndNote 8 or 9, it is converted to the new format and can no longer be used by earlier versions of EndNote.
