How do I convert a ProCite database to EndNote?

Tip: If you have compiled your own workforms in ProCite then you may find that the conversion works better if you convert these reference types to a standard pre-supplied workform and then convert to EndNote, you will then be able to change the reference type using the global editing features in EndNote.

Information for EndNote 8 and any EndNote Macintosh version:

EndNote 8 and all EndNote Macintosh versions are unable to convert ProCite databases directly.

    1. Download the attached file RIS-EndNote.pos and save this to your hard disk and note the location e.g. C:\Program Files\ProCite 5\

    2. Launch ProCite and open your database. Go to the 'File' menu and select 'Print Bibliography' and choose the RIS-EndNote.pos output style by clicking on the right-hand arrow which appears to the right of the 'Output Style' drop down list. Select 'Browse' and navigate to the location where the RIS-EndNote.pos is located (e.g. C:\Program Files\ProCite 5) and select this file and click on Open.

    3. In the 'Print Bibliography' window select the 'Configure' button and go to the 'Fields' tab. In the 'Fields' window check all optional fields.
Click 'OK', then the 'Save' button and save as a text file by selecting the 'Text Only' option from the 'Save as type' drop down list at the bottom of the screen.

    4. Transfer the file to the computer which has EndNote installed.

    5. Launch EndNote.

    6. Open or create a library to import the references into.

    7. Go to the File menu, and choose 'Import'

    8. Select the text file you exported from ProCite.

    9. Select 'Reference Manager (RIS)' as the import option and import the file.

Information for EndNote 5, 6 and 7 Windows users:

EndNote 5, 6, and 7 for Windows can directly convert a ProCite database as follows:

    1. In EndNote select 'File', 'Open', 'Open Library'
    2. Change the 'Files of Type' option at the bottom of the screen to 'All Files (*.*)'
    3. Find the ProCite database that you wish to convert, and select it as the library to open.

**Note: ProCite databases consist of two files a .PDT and a .PDX. Select the file with the .PDT extension**

    4. Click 'Open' and a dialog box will appear. Click 'Convert' to begin creating an EndNote library without customising the field and reference type mappings.

If you click 'Customize' you can select the destination Reference Types for the ProCite workforms, as well as set the destination EndNote fields for the fields in the ProCite database.

    5. After clicking 'Convert' enter a name for the EndNote library and click Save.

This will create an EndNote library using the data from your ProCite database; the original ProCite database files will not be affected.
