After applying a patch update to EndNote, it is reporting as a trial/demo version.

Firstly, always make sure you're applying the latest update to EndNote:

For X1, it is X1.02
For X2, it is X2.04
For X3, it is X3.01
For X4, it is X4.02

This list will not be updated for future version, so for the latest patch information, check the http://www.endnote.com website.

If it reverts to being a demo, you will need to un-install and re-install EndNote to re-enter your product key (EndNote X3 and earlier) or click Help > Activate EndNote (X4 and later). When re-installing it's recommended to use the up-to-date installers, available from:

To stop this from happening again should a future patch be released, perform the following:

1. Navigate to the folder where EndNote is installed, typically C:\Program Files\EndNote Xn
Where Xn is the version of EndNote.

2. Right-click on the file 'License.dat', select Properties and tick the box reading Read-only
