Scientific Computing Exhibition '97
Sandown Exhibition Centre, Esher
1-2 October 1997

Stand 105

As the largest exhibitor at this week's Scientific Computing '97, Adept Scientific (Stand 105) is showing a huge range of software and hardware products for mathematics, chemistry, data acquisition, data analysis, electronics design, simulation, computer-aided design (CAD) and a wealth of other applications.

Visitors to the stand can see the first British demonstration of Mathcad 7 Professional, the latest version of the highly popular maths software. Designed to complement Microsoft Office, Mathcad 7 Professional meets scientists' full range of computational needs. It provides a wealth of tools for performing and validating technical calculations, handling workgroup projects, and communicating and presenting results.

The latest versions of Adept's full range of mathematical, scientific and technical software are on show. These include Maple V, the leading symbolic computation software package; Electronics Workbench, the integrated schematic editor and mixed-mode SPICE simulator; and Imagineer, Intergraph's entry level CAD software, for which Adept was recently appointed master UK distributor.

Visitors also have the chance to preview Version 3 of VisSim, the popular environment for nonlinear dynamic simulation, due for its official UK launch in November 1997.

Chemists will be particularly interested in the latest version 4 of the industry-standard structure drawing package, ChemDraw. The Pro version, which features structure cleanup and database query capabilities, is available as part of the new ChemOffice Ultra suite, together with Chem3D Pro for molecular modelling, the ChemFinder Pro "chemically intelligent" database, and more besides. The latest version of GRAMS/32, software which coordinates, controls and organises laboratory data from most types and makes of spectrometer, is also on show.

Showing for the first time are two new versions of its highly successful DASYLab data acquisition system for the PC. DASYLab 4.0 is a native 32 bit software package which is ideal for use with Windows 95 and Windows NT, while the 16 bit DASYLab 3.5 is an extended version of the existing 16 bit system with a range of new features and a modified driver interface. DASYLab 4.0 also includes a multiboard driver capability for the first time. DASYLab is compatible with a broad range of data acquisition hardware, and Adept Scientific supplies a wide choice of plug-in boards and stand-alone units.

Adept is also demonstrating GetARef, a new, professional reference handling system that helps authors and publishers in two ways: first, it helps them prepare submission ready manuscripts with minimal effort; second, and even more importantly, by giving access to
open databases such as those at libraries and universities, it helps them keep track of the ever growing number of publications in their fields.

Adept's technical experts are making a significant
contribution to the seminar programme which runs alongside the exhibition. At 10.30 am on Wednesday 1 October, Neil Chapman discusses data handling in the chemical laboratory. At 11.45 am, his colleague Nigel Trevarthen gives an introduction to the principles and practice of data acquisition for R&D applications in a talk entitled "How to set up a data acquisition application". At 2.45 pm on Thursday 2 October, Paul Goossens describes "Making maths work for you", in which he will review some of the leading numeric and symbolic mathematics software packages and their usefulness to scientists. Over 120 delegates have pre-registered for each of these seminars.

On each day of the show, the organisers are running a prize draw open to all exhibitors and visitors. Each day copies of Mathcad 7 Professional, Maple V and GetARef will be won. Details of how to enter the draw are given on the show ticket.

The UK's leading specialist distributor of scientific computing products, Adept Scientific not only sells many best-in-class products, but backs these up with comprehensive support. The company's team of highly qualified experts is available throughout the exhibition to offer product and applications advice.

Further product information

Mathcad 7 Professional is an essential for engineers and scientists, providing the first desktop environment to unite all of the diverse tasks within technical projects. Its intuitive interface allows users to solve highly complex problems, using everyday mathematical notation to formulate equations easily and solve them quickly. It delivers the most complete set of calculation and web integration features available in a single calculation product, and its Windows 95-compliant interface and advanced OLE support ensure easy integration with other standard desktop applications.

Maple V is a symbolic mathematics software package that allows engineers and scientists to interact with their mathematics to produce results with precision to almost half a million decimal places in a variety of clear, concise ways. By using Maple V alongside numeric software such as Mathcad, MATLAB or PV-Wave (or even spreadsheets), users can validate their results and use Maple V's high end mathematical functions and extended programmability to process very large expressions.

GetARef is a fully interactive system that integrates with most popular word processors, allowing users to view and select texts and to produce bibliographies and reference lists without having to organise and keyword-index the reference database in advance. It retrieves references extremely fast (typically, it searches a file of 5000 references in a couple of seconds), and its powerful checking capabilities ensure that citations are presented in their correct formats.

DASYLab systems make it very simple to set up and use data acquisition systems without specialist expertise. They are used in a wide range of on-line monitoring applications, where their flexibility means that users can easily adapt the system as their requirements change. The new versions now offer extended channel capabilities for the RS232 input, and a new frequency output module and a coded switch module. They also have several new measurement and display features. Multiboard drivers are available to allows DASYLab 4.0 to drive a wide range of data acquisition boards simultaneously.
