Adept Scientific has introduced S-PLUS 4.0 for Windows, a data mining and
analysis tool that utilises powerful statistics and data visualisation to
provide a comprehensive solution for exploring data.
New S-PLUS 4.0 is the most effective analytical software available for
exploring corporate data and enabling precise, knowledge-driven decisions.
This latest version of a well-established, highly acclaimed statistical
analysis program offers a new, easy-to-use graphical user interface, tight
integration with Microsoft Excel and other leading spreadsheets, and
seamless access to a wide range of relational and other data sources. S-PLUS 4.0

Critical business and technical decisions require the ability to identify
trends and analyse data in depth. The conventional approach to the first steps
of processing and examining corporate data is to use standard data access
products such as On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) and query and reporting
tools. Recently, however, there has been a growing realisation of the
important role to be played by statistics and powerful graphics in
understanding complex data, providing a framework for more advanced
decision-making.
S-PLUS 4.0 offers a wide range of analytical tools, innovative graphics, data
access capabilities and a user-friendly interface, providing a powerful
combination of power and ease-of-use for addressing these issues. It goes
beyond OLAP, query and reporting tools, and simple statistical
"calculators" to offer rich analytical methods and visualisation
techniques for analysing and modelling data. Its unique knowledge discovery
capabilities allow organisations to take advantage of their databases of
information by stimulating, not just verifying, business hypotheses.
New, advanced statistical data mining methods offered by S-PLUS 4.0 include
leading edge techniques, next generation statistical modelling,
non-parametric modelling, clustering, classification and summarisation.
It also offers new bootstrapping and non-linear mixed effects models. These
techniques, the most powerful knowledge discovery methods commercially
available, enable users to analyse informational relationships by revealing
trends in multidimensional data. S-PLUS 4.0 gives users access to modern
statistical techniques not found in other data mining products.
A particular new feature is advanced data visualisation based on Trellis
graphics, which allows users to see and analyse adjacent multiple variables.
S-PLUS 4.0 also introduces the ability to view multiple, simultaneous 3-D
rotation views as well as 2-D projections in 3-D space, offering additional
ways to gain insight by visualising patterns found in data. Graphical
enhancements such as these make S-PLUS 4.0 a superior interactive data mining
environment.
The new Microsoft Office-compatible user interface delivers drag-and-drop
graph creation, intuitive menus and dialogues, and powerful toolbars.
S-PLUS 4.0 also offers completely object-oriented point-and-click editable
graphics, so users can easily tailor the details of their graphics. User
interface menus, toolbars and dialogue boxes can now be customised and
extended to suit the needs of the user. With a script window, users can generate
programs to automate repetitive tasks and then convert the text into
toolbar buttons to create one-step analytics. These toolbars and functions
can be easily distributed to colleagues, encouraging group collaboration.
S-PLUS 4.0 accepts existing data in SAS, Matlab and SPSS formats, as well as from
any OLE 2.0-compatible application or ODBC-compliant database. S-PLUS 4.0
graphics can be exported to leading file formats such as EPS and GIF, or pasted
into standard word processors. In addition, S-PLUS 4.0 includes a unique
PowerPoint Wizard for automatic presentation production.
Unlike most statistical data mining and analysis tools, S-PLUS 4.0 is an open,
highly extensible system. While many competitive programs limit users to a set
of pre-defined analyses, S-PLUS 4.0 allows researchers and analysts to build
on a base library of more than 2,000 statistical and graphical functions. This
flexibility ensures that S-PLUS 4.0 can expand without limitation to satisfy
the needs of each individual user. S-PLUS 4.0 operates with Windows 95, Windows
NT 3.51 or higher and Windows 3.1.
Developed by MathSoft Inc, S-PLUS 4.0 is based on S, an object-oriented
language developed at Lucent Technologies specifically for data
visualisation, exploration and programming with data. It is supplied and
