Top Spectroscopy
Software Optimised for
Windows 95 and NT

Adept Scientific introduces a new, full 32 bit, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95 version of Galactic Industries' highly successful GRAMS/32 data analysis and management software for spectroscopy applications. Version 5 is a major upgrade that adds versatile spectral workbooks, advanced network administration tools and application packs to GRAMS/32, providing even more powerful tool for analysing and storing spectroscopic data. GRAMS/32 allows data to be imported from just about any laboratory instrument and stored in a standard format for manipulation, searching and archiving.

Spectral workbooks, a significant new productivity enhancement in GRAMS/32 version 5, provide a custom environment for processing and viewing data. Spectroscopists can either use the workbooks supplied with the package, or create their own using page templates, Array Basic scripts and the other GRAMS/32 tools and components.

At the minimum, a workbook is a collection of related views designed to offer the spectroscopist the ability to view and toggle between a selection of different representations of the same data. All necessary views are bound together as "pages". By simply opening the workbook, all the pages are loaded simultaneously.

In addition to functioning as a data view, individual workbook pages or the entire workbook itself can be assigned an automated task that will process data or perform a function when data is loaded.

This is achieved by associating Array Basic programs with the page or workbook, providing it with a flexible level of intelligent automation. An Array Basic program can be set to run automatically when the user selects or activates the page, exits the current page or double-clicks on the page's selection tab. This provides a high degree of automation, and also allows users to set up "intelligent servants" for handling routine chores.

Since a workbook is a fully customisable environment, it can have its own set of user-defined menus, ranging from the very simple to highly advanced. A workbook designed for use with an instrument control/data acquisition package can have extra menus for sending instrument commands and receiving data. Adding new menu items or rearranging the existing menu structure is done from within the GRAMS/32 environment with descriptive, easy-to-use dialogues. The toolbar can also be custom configured for a particular workbook.

System administrators are given added functionality with GRAMS/32 version 5.0. The configuration manager allows them to manage site licence installation, assign individual rights and group rights, and define defaults and settings.. In addition to creating user workgroups, they can configure individual user profiles, allowing each user to have his or her own set of "preferred" workbooks, specialised menus and toolbars, and  individual access privileges. These user profiles travel with their owners wherever they log on to the network.

The new file open dialogue includes an automatic preview that allows users to see which files they have selected to open, and to open up to 64 files simultaneously (compared with 32 files with previous versions).

Improved printing options make it possible to print either an entire workbook, a workbook page, a range of pages or a peak report.

Other new features include the ability to paste a workbook page as a bitmap, picture or raw data, and to copy and paste GRAMS page objects in order to clone buttons and data displays. Menu display shortcuts, a smart axis facility which automatically turns the X axis to the correct orientation, and easier zoom and scroll facilities are also provided.

GRAMS/32 version 5 operates on standard 486 or Pentium-compatible PCs running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, with a maths co-processor and CD-ROM drive. It is supplied and supported by Adept Scientific plc, 6 Business Centre West, Avenue One, Letchworth, Herts. SG6 2HB; telephone (01462) 480055, fax (01462) 480213, email
