On-Line Reference
Management and
Retrieval

The reference management system recently launched in the UK by Adept Scientific plc now includes the ability to access data across the Internet. GetARef for Windows is a fast, smart reference handling system for everyone who needs to keep abreast of literature in science, technology or medicine. Its fast retrieval technology allows users to locate references from a variety of different sources, format them and move them into a word processor document, all with a set of simple keystrokes.

The latest version will be a particular benefit to academics and researchers needing access to remote material. It can automatically import references from several on-line sources, including university and public libraries.

In addition to the Medline, Silverplatter, CDPlus, Compact Cambridge and Data Star reference management systems, GetARef can now also access and convert information from BIDS, the UK's leading provider of networked information for the higher education and research communities, which is run by the University of Bath. GetARef can also now accept data from Papyrus, the widely used DOS-based system. The latest version of the GetARef conversion module, GarConv, contains routines that allow GetARef to convert data and complete files from Papyrus, and then drop them into the appropriate place in users' word processed documents. A plain text converter has also been introduced for the first time, and other non-supported formats (including on-line data types) can be supplied on request.

The real benefit of GetARef is that, from a desktop PC, users can scan, retrieve and organise thousands of references located anywhere on-line. In contrast to alternative systems, GetARef requires minimal user input: the user does not normally need to specify the format of the bibliography in any way. This greatly extends the range of titles that can be searched and accessed, and makes it particularly easy for users who have never used bibliographic software before. Any number of reference files can be handled without the need to specify key words, and retrieval speed is virtually independent of whether the search is by specific fields (author, journal etc) or on a free text basis.

GetARef is being increasingly adopted as the standard in major universities and research establishments. For example, the Norwegian University of Technics and Science, including the University Hospital in Trondheim, Norway, has just signed an academic site licence agreement which makes GetARef available to more than 10,000 students and 3,000 faculty members and university employees.

GetARef is developed by DatAid AB of Stockholm, Sweden, and is supplied and supported in the UK by Adept Scientific plc ,6 Business Centre West, Avenue One, Letchworth, Herts SG6 2HB; telephone (01462) 480055, fax (01462) 480213,
