Fast Data Acquisition
From Your PC

On Stand D29 at today's Control & Instrumentation 97 exhibition in Birmingham, Adept Scientific is demonstrating the new DATAshuttle Express from Strawberry Tree, Inc. -- a single-box solution data acquisition device that enables scientists and engineers to take high speed measurements from a wide variety of transducers and sensors using a standard notebook or desktop PC. The compact, portable DATAshuttle Express incorporates transducer excitation and simply plugs into the PC's parallel port -- a complete data acquisition solution in one unit.

The DATAshuttle Express enhances and complements the popular DATAshuttle range of parallel port data acquisition solutions. The new family of devices is modular in design, allowing users to connect a large number of data acquisition channels to a single notebook or desktop PC, easily and economically. DATAshuttle Express is light, portable and robust, and incorporates built-in signal conditioning and terminations for a wide choice of transducers and sensors.

Transducer Excitation
All transducer excitation and signal linearisation functions are carried out within DATAshuttle Express. Two screw termination drawers slide into the unit, providing interfaces for up to eight channels each of input from strain gauges, piezoelectric sensors or temperature measurement devices (thermocouples and RTDs). Transducers are simply terminated to screw or BNC terminals.

A switch on each channel selects either voltage or current input, and a "test" switch simulates the transducer or sensor signal to the computer, making it much faster and easier to isolate and repair field wiring problems in large channel count systems.

Easy, Reliable, High-Speed Measurement
Sixteen differential analogue inputs, two analogue outputs, two 16-bit counter timers and 12 digital I/Os can be interfaced to the PC via its parallel port. There is no need to open the computer, set board addresses, adjust calibration or worry about hardware conflicts. DATAshuttle Express has nine software-selectable gain ranges and is quick and easy to configure, making it ideal for field and factory use.

The system is modular and expandable. Multiple units can be stacked in groups of four to achieve a total channel capacity of 240 analogue inputs, 30 analogue outputs, 30 counter timers and 180 digital I/Os, all connected to a single notebook or desktop PC. Auto-calibration of analogue inputs and outputs (with non-volatile storage of calibration data) and digital filtering ensure accurate, stable, low noise acquisition.

A wide range of software choices includes QuickLog for Windows (which comes free with the unit and provides basic data acquisition, display and logging); and WorkBench PC for Windows, full-featured, intuitive software that makes it easy to create data acquisition, control and analysis set-ups on the PC. Development tools are also available.

DATAshuttle Express is supplied and supported in the UK by Adept Scientific plc, 6 Business Centre West, Avenue One, Letchworth, Herts. SG6 2HB; telephone (01462) 480055, fax (01462) 480213, email: data.acq@adeptscience.co.uk.
