Some of these documents contain calculations you
might do yourself, such as income taxes or unit conversion while
cooking. Some of them are calculations which are done for you
to compute your energy bill, your approval and payments for
a mortgage, or the football statistics you read in the newspaper.
Some of them are calculations which explain the way things in
our world work, such as radio broadcasting, bar code labeling,
and determining liability in class action suits. The goal is
to show how mathematics pervades the world around us, and to
give insight into the way some things happen.
This book is not a static collection of calculations. These documents
are meant, above all, for play. All the examples incorporate
parameters which can be changed, and suggestions as to what
you should look for in the changing results. It is our hope
that you'll explore each of these applications, and be richer
for the experience.
