Surak’s Nightrider Cycle for NSPCC

This past week, Surak Perera, our Maths & Simulation Software Specialist, took part in Nightrider – a 100 km night-time cycle through central London – to help raise donations for NSPCC. He talks about his journey on the Adept Scientific blog.

“Starting the ride outside Alexandra Palace at midnight on Saturday was nice; warm-up coming up the hill, and fast start downhill. There were around 4000 riders with staggered starts of 5 minutes. The start was strong and I quickly got going, overtaking everyone uphill. Cycling to work from Hitchin to Letchworth had prepared me well, I thought…

It is an amazing experience riding through a city at night. You see its different characteristics in a raw form. I felt like I was rolling around all of London’s social facets.

Towards the final leg, the last 20 km, I suddenly lost all energy in my legs; I had hit the wall. At that stage it was simply mind-over-matter that kept me going. The final ascent up the hill back to Ally Pally felt more like a retribution of fire, as opposed to a warm-up like it did at the start. It struck me why I was doing this though, so I never gave up. I attribute my weak finish to the following:

  • They only gave us a muffin and a coffee at the midway point
  • Absolutely no training for this event

Highlights:

  • Traffic jam at Piccadilly Circus + 100s of Saturday Nighters + 100s of Night Riders = Fun.
  • Dawn; looking up and seeing the Tower Bridge and feeling like I had stumbled across it on my way.
  • Tripping a 30 mph speeding board. This gave us a rough indication of speed downhill.

This thing was hard, so I hope you are happy with my accomplishment!”
